What Is Dry Rot
What is dry rot? The rot typically occurs when too much water or moisture is in contact with the wood. In fact, the dry rot fungus has the ability to carry moisture and can pull it from the ground as well.
However, there are several other types of wood eating fungus often mistaken for dry rot. Therefore, the next time you’re in your crawl space, look for wood that has shrunk or has cracks. Furthermore, look for any decay on floor joists or beams, and any material growing on the beam (rust colored, light purple, white, yellow or a gray haze).
What Is Dry Rot – The Symptoms
If you find any of these symptoms on your floor joists or wood beams in your crawl space, then you have a wood rot problem. Moreover, it’s important to have this taken care of immediately. To be clear, the wood rot will weaken the wood – and that’s what’s holding up your floors and home.
At first glance, the wooden beams and floor joists in your crawl space or basement may seem dry. If there’s a way for moisture to get in your crawl space, then you’re at risk for dry rot.
What Is Dry Rot – Prevention
In order to prevent dry rot or wood rot, it’s important to dry out your damp crawl space. In general, the best way to do this is to seal it or encapsulate.
First, a 20-mil barrier, CrawlSeal, is installed over the dirt floor and walls. This thick barrier will prevent moisture from entering your crawl space through the floor or walls.
To clarify, sealing your crawl space is the best way to eliminate the risk of dry rot and other problems like mold and flooding from heavy rain. If you’re still unsure if sealing your crawl space is the answer to wood rot, talk with one of our experts.
