What Is the Minimum Size Access Opening Allowed for a Crawl Space?

The International Residential Code recommends that openings for crawl space access must be at least 18 by 24 inches if the entrance exists in the floor of the house, or 16 by 24 inches if the entrance exists in the crawl space walls. However, local legislation may have its own requirements that contradict these codes.
