Hurricane Matthew was a Category 5 hurricane that swept through the Western Atlantic, including parts of Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti and the southeastern United States.
According to reports, in total, the storm killed 49 people in the US, including 28 in North Carolina, 12 in Florida, 3 in Georgia, 4 in South Carolina, and 2 in Virginia. Early estimates indicated total economic losses between $4–6 billion in the southeastern United States, prior to the widespread flooding in North Carolina.
In Dare County, North Carolina officials estimated $42.6 million in damage to over 4,500 properties in the county, of those, 234 received major damage.
With so much devastation in the eastern regions of Virginia and North Carolina, many homeowners were left with flooded crawl spaces and living spaces. However, South Mills, North Carolina resident, Matt Moyer, was fortunate enough to have his property protected from the hurricane thanks to waterproofing solutions by JES.

Due to high flood waters many residents had to use alternative methods of travel to get in and out of the neighborhood.
