I remember it pretty clearly because it wasn’t that long ago when Hurricane Matthew tore into the east coast causing one of the worst flooding events in the southeastern region, especially in northeastern North Carolina. Causing a worldwide total of over $15 billion dollars in damages, Matthew’s impact is still felt nearly two years later.

In North Carolina, the storm surge left thousands of homeowners displaced with their homes under water. FEMA reported over 1000 people had to be rescued.
Hurricane Protection
JES was contacted by Mr. Matt Moyer, a resident of South Mills, NC early on in 2016. While working on a deck project, Mr. Moyer noticed potential settlement issues with his foundation. JES performed an inspection and recommended push piers to address his sinking foundation as well as crawl space support jacks to support the main floor joists in the main bedroom, which happened to be entirely unsupported. The inspection also uncovered the soil on the property saturated with moisture and multiple puddles of standing water on top of the vapor barrier. JES also recommended drain tile and two sump pumps. The inspector’s system design included solutions to stabilize the sinking foundation as well as a system to prevent further moisture damage.
Hurricane Matthew Was No Joke
The project was completed in mid-May 2016, but when Matthew struck in October Mr. Moyer reached out to JES again. This time it was to report out on something of epic proportions – his house was the only house on his entire street to stay 100% dry.

We wanted to see it for ourselves but had to wait until we could safely make the trip. It was like something out of a movie and Mr. Moyer did the math – the sump pump system pumped out over 218,000 gallons of water during the storm. To add perspective, that’s what a city water tank holds.
