Hurricane Season 2018

Understanding What’s on the Horizon…

Hurricane Season 2018

Hurricanes and tropical storms are notorious for causing heavy rainfall and flooding, especially in the Mid-Atlantic region during Hurricane Season 2018.

Not only are hurricanes dangerous, but they also result in millions of dollars’ worth of damage every year.

One of the greatest threats to your home during a hurricane is flooding i.e. storm surges.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) a storm surge can increase the ocean’s water level as much as 30 feet, the equivalent of a three story building. This new influx of water creates catastrophic results for homeowners located on the coast.

In fact, the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy states that flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster in Virginia. If you have just one inch of water, it could cost you up to $8,000 in clean-up and repair.

Hurricane Season 2018 – Be Prepared

Although there is no way to prevent a tropical storm or hurricane, there are many steps you can take as a homeowner to lessen the impact of a hurricane.

In addition to standard preparations such as double-checking your insurance policy to see if you are covered for flood damage, there are many things you can do to your home specifically to make sure your foundation is protected.

  • Check Your Sump Pump

If you have a sump pump make sure it’s working properly. In the event of a power outage, it’s always good to have a battery backup to ensure your sump pump will continue to work.

  • Address Basement Cracks

Foundation repair solutions reinforce cracking, bowing walls and prevent water from leaking through.

  • Install an Interior Drainage System

A BasementGutter™ Drainage System works with your sump pump to remove moisture from your basement. Its unique design keeps it separate from the soil, so you don’t’ have to worry about it clogging.

Hurricane Season 2018 – Storm Names

Hurricanes and tropical storms can hit at any time but they are most prevalent during Hurricane Season (which officially runs from June 1 to November 30). Hurricane Season 2018 has already started and the names for this season’s storms have been released:

Hurricane Season 2018 – Don’t Risk It

Call a reputable basement waterproofing company to inspect the area(s) you’re concerned about. A waterproofing contractor with the proper training and experience can evaluate your wet basement or damp crawl space and recommend the appropriate solution. It’s best to seek the services of a licensed foundation repair company because they have the expertise necessary to evaluate your home from the ground up and introduce a permanent fix.
