Crawl Space Condensation – A DIY Fix?

Not all crawl space vapor barriers are created equal. The most commonly available vapor barrier is cheap and thin – like putting a trash bag in your crawl space. This thin crawl space vapor barrier tears easily and is a pain to replace, which you’ll have to do often, and the cost will add up. Plus your crawl space condensation problem still won’t be fixed!.

Some contractors will recommend installing ventilation fans but that will only increase your crawl space condensation problem. The fans will push in hot air, creating more condensation by increasing crawl space humidity. So instead of fixing the problem, it only makes it worse.

During the warmer months, the air in your crawl space is typically much cooler than the outside air. The air in your crawl space is cooler because the ground maintains a steady temperature throughout the year –in the South Eastern United States the average ground temperature is around 52°F-62°F.

So, in the summer when you vent your crawl space you’re letting hot air into the much cooler crawl space. When the hot and cold airs combine, it creates crawl space humidity. And when the relative humidity in your crawl space reaches 100%, crawl space condensation forms. The condensation damages insulation, HVAC duct work and wood, and is the primary cause of wood rot.
